So, what is money?
Money is a swapping tool. Long ago, if you had mangoes and wanted fish, you had to find someone with fish who wanted mangoes. Tricky! So people invented money: something everyone agrees is worth something, so you can swap it for anything. In Jamaica we use Jamaican dollars, written like this: J$100.
Money is what we swap for the things we need and want. You earn it, save it, and spend it. In Jamaica, the money is Jamaican dollars (J$).
Where does money come from?
Money does not just appear. Grown-ups earn it by doing work: a nurse, a farmer, a shopkeeper, a bus driver. Maybe you get some too, as lunch money, a gift from Granny, or pocket money for helping at home. However it comes, there are really only three things you can do with it:
The big idea: needs vs wants
Here is the money skill that beats all others. Some things you truly need: without them you would not be safe, healthy, or able to go to school. Other things you just want: they are fun and nice, but you would be perfectly okay without them. Smart spenders always pay for their needs first, then use what is left for wants.
A need is something you must have to live well and be safe, like food, clean water, a home, school things, and going to the doctor when you are sick.
A want is something that is nice to have but not necessary, like sweets, a new game, or headphones. Wants are not bad! You just buy them after your needs are taken care of.
Your turn: sort them out
Below are eight things. Drag each one into the right bin: is it a Need or a Want? When all eight are sorted, press Check my answers. Some are trickier than they look!
Play the Game Needs vs Wants ๐งบ
Drag all eight cards into a bin. A patty when you are hungry at school is closer to a need; a patty when you already have lunch is a want. Do your best guess!
How to play
- Press and hold a card, then drag it into the Needs bin or the Wants bin.
- Sort all eight cards.
- Press Check my answers โ to see how you did.
๐ Needs
๐ Wants
Ask a grown-up in your home to name one thing they spent money on this week that was a need, and one that was a want. Grown-ups have to make this exact choice all the time, even for big things like the light bill (that is a need!) which you will predict in the last lesson.
- Money is a tool we swap for things. You can spend it, save it, or share it.
- A need keeps you safe and healthy. A want is nice but not necessary.
- Smart spenders pay for needs first, then use what is left for wants.
