What Parents Need to Know About AI and Their Kids

Your kids are already using AI every day. Here is what you need to know and how you can help them use it wisely.

Real talk: if you have a teenager in 2026, your child is almost certainly using AI already. ChatGPT for a CSEC essay outline, an image generator for a school project, a coding assistant when something breaks, a filter on the photo they just posted. Some of it you have seen; plenty of it you have not. None of that makes you a bad parent. It just means the homework table looks different from the one you grew up at, and you deserve a clear picture of what is happening on it.

How Your Kids Are Already Using AI

Before you worry, here is the reassuring part: most of what they do with it is ordinary and useful. A Form 4 student asks ChatGPT to explain simultaneous equations a second way after the textbook version did not land. Another uses Claude to pressure-test the argument in a Caribbean Studies essay she wrote herself. A teenager learning to code pastes in a broken Python script and asks why it throws an error. Someone drafting a CSEC English A piece runs it past a tool for feedback on structure, not to have it written for them.

The pattern is worth noticing. Used like this, AI behaves less like a cheat sheet and more like a patient study partner who never gets tired at eleven at night. The trouble starts only when the tool stops being a partner and becomes a substitute for the thinking, which is the line the rest of this guide is about.

There is a tidy way to picture the good version, and it comes from how children have always learned. Researchers describe a "zone" just beyond what a child can do alone: with a little guided help they manage it today, and tomorrow they can do it by themselves. A good tutor lives in that zone, offering just enough support and then stepping back. At its best, AI plays that role, a scaffold. The danger is a scaffold that never comes down. Help that fades as your child grows is teaching; help that does the whole job forever is a crutch. Most of this guide is really about keeping the tool on the teaching side of that line.

Two ideas from developmental psychology make the rest of this guide click. The first is scaffolding: a learner does with guided help today what they will do alone tomorrow, and good help fades on purpose as the child grows into the task. The test of any AI use is simple, then. Is the scaffold coming down over time, or is it doing the whole job and never leaving? Ask your child to explain their AI-assisted work back to you and you can hear the answer for yourself.

The second is co-regulation and emotional safety. Children learn best beside a calm adult who makes it safe to be wrong. If AI mistakes, school AI rules, or a confusing tool become a source of panic or secrecy, learning shuts down. If you stay curious and unflustered, your child borrows that steadiness, stays honest with you, and keeps experimenting, which is exactly where the real skill is built.

What to Watch Out For

AI is genuinely useful and genuinely imperfect, both at once. Four concerns are worth your attention, and each comes with something concrete you can do this week.

Over-Reliance

The real risk is not that AI is evil; it is that it makes skipping the hard part feel painless. A student who lets a tool write every English A essay never builds the muscle that essay is meant to build, and it shows up cruelly on exam day when no tool is allowed in the room. The skill being skipped is invisible right up until it is needed.

What to do: Make "explain it to me" your house rule. After your child uses AI on a piece of work, ask them to walk you through it without the screen. There is real learning science behind this small ritual: explaining something to another person, what researchers call learning by teaching, forces the brain to organise and check its own understanding in a way that simply reading the answer never does. If they can teach it back to you, they learned it. If they cannot, the AI did the assignment and they did not. Keep your tone curious rather than testing; a child who feels quizzed clams up, while a child who feels you are genuinely interested will happily show off what they know.

Misinformation

AI tools state wrong things with the same calm confidence they state right ones. They will invent a date, a quote, even a source that sounds perfectly real. Researchers call it hallucination, and it is not a rare bug. A student trusting a confident answer for an SBA can end up citing something that was never written.

What to do: Turn doubt into a habit. Teach your child to treat an AI answer as a first draft and ask one question of it: "How would I check this?" Make a game of catching the tool out; finding the error is more memorable than being told the tool can err.

Privacy

Many AI tools keep what gets typed into them and may use it to train future versions. A child pasting in a full name, a home address, a school, or a friend's secret may be handing it somewhere it cannot be pulled back from. Photos uploaded for a filter can be stored too.

What to do: Set one plain rule and explain why it exists: never type anything into an AI tool you would not be comfortable reading aloud to a stranger. Where the app allows it, turn off chat history and the "use my data for training" setting together, so your child knows how.

Academic Integrity

Caribbean schools are still writing their AI rules, and they do not agree. One teacher may welcome AI for brainstorming while the teacher next door treats the same use as cheating. Your child can do everything in good faith and still trip over a policy nobody spelled out.

What to do: Help your child find out the actual rule for each class rather than guessing. If a teacher has not said, encourage them to ask directly. The safe default everywhere is honesty: be open about where AI helped, and the line is much harder to cross by accident.

How to Support Your Child's AI Use

  1. Stay curious instead of afraid: Banning AI outright does not protect a child; it just sends them to use it where you cannot see. A child who learns it with you nearby learns it better. A calm adult beside a child is not just supervision; it is co-regulation. Your steadiness teaches their nervous system that a confusing tool, a wrong answer, or a mistake is nothing to panic about, and a child who feels safe to be wrong is a child who keeps trying.
  2. Sit beside them and learn it too: Open ChatGPT or Gemini yourself and ask your child to show you what they make with it. You will understand the tool faster, and they will love being the teacher for once. Letting them teach you is not just sweet; explaining a thing out loud is one of the most powerful ways a brain locks it in, so you are handing them a real learning boost while you learn too.
  3. Push for making, not just asking: There is a world of difference between telling AI to write an essay and using it to build a small app, a study quiz, or a project they are proud of. Building leaves a skill behind; passive asking rarely does.
  4. Invest in proper guidance: Casual use teaches casual habits. Structured, mentored programmes, including The Genius Project, give young people the depth that picking it up alone cannot.
  5. Talk about the ethics out loud: Bias, privacy, and honesty are not side topics. They are the lessons that decide whether your child uses this technology well, so raise them often and without lecturing.

Your child is growing up at a genuine turning point, the kind that comes along once in a generation, and the way they learn to work with AI now will shape the careers open to them later. Support that learning rather than fearing it, and you hand your child a real head start.
