Game 1: the quiet detective ๐คซ
Hand your app to a family member who has never seen it. Now comes the HARDEST rule in all of app making:
ZIP YOUR LIPS and WATCH ๐ค๐
- Say only: "This is my app. Try it." Then zip it!
- Watch their face. Watch their finger. Where do they stop? Where do they frown?
- Draw a โญ on your paper for every part they liked, and a โ for every part that confused them.
- After 2 minutes, ask your tester: "What was fun? What was confusing?"
Every โ becomes one fix-wish with your grown-up, one at a time, just like build day.
Game 2: the name game ๐ท๏ธ
A great app name passes 3 tests:
๐ Easy to SAY
- Can you say it with your mouth full? (Try it. Seriously. It is funny.)
- Short names win: 1 or 2 words.
๐ง Easy to REMEMBER
- Say it to Granny ONCE. Ask her tomorrow. Does she remember?
- This is the famous granny test!
๐ก Tells the JOB (or the joy)
- Plant Pal waters plants. Mango Catch catches mangoes.
- Does your name give a clue?
- Shout out 6 name ideas. Grown-up writes them all down. Silly ones welcome!
- Cross out any that fail the 3 tests, until 2 names are left.
- Run the granny test on both. The one she remembers tomorrow WINS.
- Ask your grown-up to put the winning name at the top of your app with one fix-wish.
Game 3: the launch party ๐
Every real app gets a launch. Yours too:
- Gather the family (2 people counts as a crowd).
- Stand up and say: your app's name, WHO it helps, and WHAT it does. That is called a pitch, and you just did one.
- Let everyone try it. Clapping is allowed and encouraged.
- Take a photo of YOU (not the screen with any private info) holding your launch. A builder's first launch is a big deal.
Quick check!
Your cousin taps the wrong button and looks confused. What does a quiet detective do?
Detective level: expert! Their confusion is a clue, and clues are treasure. Fix the app, not the cousin. ๐ต๏ธโญ
