THE GENIUS PROJECT
✨ Lesson 1 of 4

AI That Makes Things

🕒 About 10 minutes 🧠 Big idea: guess the next word 🔢 Counting game inside

You know AI that sorts (crab or fish?). You know AI that predicts (tomorrow's weather). But how does AI write a story?! Today you learn the trick. And the maths is just counting!

Finish this sentence

Say it out loud: "Once upon a ___." You said "time", right?

Now this one: "The parrot ate a sweet ___." Mango? Banana? But NOT "bicycle"! Why? Because your brain has heard a million stories. It knows which words come next. It kept count without you even noticing!

That is the whole secret! AI that writes just plays "finish the sentence", one word at a time. Guess a word. Add it. Guess again. Soon, a whole story pours out! AI that makes things is called generative AI.

New Word! Generative AI

AI that MAKES new things: stories, pictures, songs, and even games. It works by guessing what comes next, one little piece at a time.

Where do the guesses come from? Counting!

How does the AI know what comes next? It READS first. Millions of stories! And while it reads, it COUNTS. After "a sweet", how many times came "mango"? How many times "banana"? Big count = big chance.

Here is a mini story book. It is tiny, but it works exactly like the AI's giant one:

The parrot ate a sweet mango. Grandma sliced a sweet mango for lunch. After school we shared a sweet banana. The market lady sold me a sweet mango. Daddy packed a sweet banana in my lunch box. On the beach we ate a sweet mango. My cousin picked a sweet soursop. For dessert there was a sweet mango. The bird stole a sweet banana! Auntie brought home a sweet mango.

🎮 Mini game: be the counting machine

In the story book above, the words "a sweet" appear 10 times. Count what comes after them! Tap +1 each time you spot that fruit after "a sweet", and watch the chance bars grow.

🥭 mango 0
🍌 banana 0
🍈 soursop 0
Count each fruit that comes right after the words "a sweet".

Counts become chances

Out of 10 times, mango came 6 times. Banana came 3 times. Soursop came once. So the AI thinks:

🥭mango6 out of 10 → most likely
🍌banana3 out of 10 → sometimes
🍈soursop1 out of 10 → rarely

"6 out of 10" is called a probability. That is a fancy word for a chance you can count. And here is a fun bit: the AI does not ALWAYS pick mango. Sometimes it picks banana, just to keep stories fresh!

🎲
New Word! Probability

A chance you can count. If mango came after "a sweet" 6 times out of 10, the probability of mango is 6 out of 10. Bigger counts = bigger chances.

Check your understanding

In a story book, after "we played" the counts are: football 8 times, cricket 2 times, dominoes 0 times. Which ending is the AI MOST likely to pick?

Tap the answer you think is right.

Football! The biggest count wins the biggest chance: 8 out of 10 for football. Dominoes was never seen after "we played", so its chance is 0 out of 10.

Pictures and songs work the same way

Picture AI guesses tiny dots of colour instead of words. Music AI guesses the next note. It is all ONE big idea: learn from millions of examples, then guess what comes next.

🛡️ Wise genius rule

The AI is guessing. So sometimes it guesses WRONG, while sounding super sure! That is called a "hallucination". A genius always double-checks with a grown-up or a trusted book. The AI is a helper, not a boss.

📌 Remember these 3 things

1) Generative AI makes new things by guessing what comes next, piece by piece. 2) The guesses come from counting millions of examples, and counts become probabilities. 3) It can be wrong while sounding sure, so double-check what matters.

🎮 3D Vox game: Create the Parade

Generative AI writes stories by predicting the next word. You write a PARADE by predicting the next bird. Same trick, more feathers!
