Before the risks, your child needs one idea that makes everything else easier. AI does not know things the way a person knows things. It learns patterns from enormous amounts of data and then predicts what fits the pattern. A chatbot predicts the next words. An image generator predicts what pixels match a description. This single idea explains almost every problem in this guide. If AI learns from data made by humans, it absorbs the patterns in that data, including the unfair ones. AI Bias: The Risk Most Parents Miss

Of everything in this guide, bias is the concern we most wish parents understood, because it is quiet. There is no scary pop-up. The child just slowly absorbs a skewed picture of the world and assumes it came from a neutral machine.

Here is how it works. An AI system learns from data. If that data over-represents some groups and under-represents others, the system's output leans the same way. Ask many image generators for "a CEO" and you tend to get older men. Ask for "a nurse" and you tend to get women. Ask for "a criminal" and the results can skew by race in ugly ways. And explain the reason rather than just the rule, because a child who understands why data matters will protect it even when you are not watching.

The fear that AI will make children lazy is reasonable, but it depends entirely on how the tool is used. AI can short-circuit learning when a child types "write my essay" and hands in the result. Ask Gemini something specific and checkable about Caribbean history or local facts, for example, a date, a quote, or "name three Jamaican scientists and their discoveries".

  1. Copy the answer, then verify each claim with a normal Google search and a reliable source.
  2. Mark each fact true, false, or "can't confirm", and count how many held up.
  3. End on the family question: "How would we know if this was true?"

Why it works: turning fact-checking into a game gives a child agency instead of fear. They internalise a healthy, lifelong scepticism, treating AI as a confident first draft rather than the final word, through doing rather than being warned.
