The Average and the Trend

๐Ÿ•’ About 8 minutes ๐Ÿง  Two ideas: average and trend ๐ŸŽฎ 1 game to play

Two little numbers can tell you a lot about your money. The average tells you what you usually spend. The trend tells you which way your spending is heading. Today you learn to find both, using one week of snack money.

What is an average?

An average is a sharing trick. You take a set of numbers, add them all together, then share the total out equally by dividing by how many numbers there were. What you get is one tidy number that stands in for the whole group.

Say you write down your snack money for one week: Monday J$40, Tuesday J$60, Wednesday J$50, Thursday J$80, and Friday J$70. That is five numbers. To find the average, you do two easy steps.

Step 1, add them up: 40 + 60 + 50 + 80 + 70 = 300. So you spent J$300 on snacks all week. Step 2, share it out equally across the 5 days: 300 รท 5 = J$60. So on a normal day, you spend about J$60 on snacks. J$60 is your average.

New Word! Average

The average is what you get when you share a group of numbers out equally. Add them all up, then divide by how many there are. It tells you what a normal, usual amount looks like.

Let the machine do the maths

You do not have to add and divide in your head. Below is the Averaging Machine. Drag your five snack days into it, press the button, and it will draw a bar for each day and find your average for you. Watch the gold line slide to J$60.

Play the Game The Averaging Machine ๐Ÿงฎ

Drag all 5 snack days into the machine, and it will crunch them into ONE super useful number: your average daily spend.

How to play
  1. Press and hold a day card, then drag it into the Averaging Machine box below.
  2. Do this for all 5 days (Monday to Friday).
  3. Press "Crunch the Numbers! ๐Ÿงฎ".
  4. Watch the bars appear, then watch the gold AVERAGE line find its level.
๐Ÿงฎ The Averaging Machine
Drag all 5 day cards into the Averaging Machine first.

See how the machine added everything (J$300) and shared it across 5 days (J$60 each)? That gold line is your average. It says: "On a usual day this week, snacks cost you about J$60." One number, and now you know your normal.

Now for the trend

An average tells you your usual amount, but it does not tell you which way things are moving. For that you need the trend. A trend is simply the direction the numbers are heading over time: are they going UP, going DOWN, or staying about the SAME?

Look again at your snack week on the chart. Monday you spent J$40. By Friday you were up at J$70. Day by day, the bars mostly lean higher. That climb is an upward trend. Knowing it, you can make a good guess about next week: if nothing changes, you will probably keep spending a bit more.

๐Ÿ“ˆ
New Word! Trend

A trend is the general direction your numbers are heading over time: up, down, or staying about the same. A trend helps you guess what might happen next.

Here is why both numbers matter for your money. The average says, "You usually spend about J$60 a day." The trend says, "Careful, it is creeping up." Put them together and you have a tiny money detective in your pocket: one number for your normal, one arrow for where you are heading.

โœ‹ Quick check
A kid writes down lunch spending for a week: Mon J$50, Tue J$55, Wed J$60, Thu J$65, Fri J$70. Which way is the trend heading? Tap the answer you think is right.
๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ง Do this with a grown-up

Ask a grown-up to help you write down what you spend on one thing (snacks, or maybe bus fare) for 5 days this week. At the end, add the five numbers up and divide by 5 to find your average. Then look at the days in order: is the trend going up, going down, or staying flat? You just did real data science, the same kind AI helpers do.

๐Ÿง  What you just learned
  • An average shares a group of numbers out equally into ONE number: add them all up, then divide by how many there are.
  • Your average tells you your normal, what you usually spend.
  • A trend is the direction your numbers are heading over time: up, down, or about the same.
  • Together, the average and the trend help you guess next week and spot when spending is creeping up.

Three days of snack money stand as voxel towers. Make them equal and the average pops right out!
